Consultative Selling Training – Advisory Selling

Your client isn't looking for a sales pitch. Your client wants a sales professional who understands their situation, asks the right questions, and helps them make a good decision.

During my Consultative Selling Training, I teach salespeople, account managers, and sales professionals how to sell less from the perspective of their product or service and more from the actual needs, challenges, and objectives of the customer.

Consultative Selling, also known as advisory selling , is not about telling as much as possible. It is about asking the right questions, listening carefully, probing, recognizing commercial opportunities, and creating value for the customer .

The result: better sales conversations, more insight into actual buying motives, and greater commercial control over the sales process.

What is Consultative Selling?

Consultative Selling is a sales method in which the salesperson acts as an advisor to the customer. Instead of directly presenting a product, service, or solution, I first investigate the customer's situation, problems, needs, objectives, and decision-making process.

A consultative seller therefore does not try to answer the question "What can I sell?" as quickly as possible, but first investigates:

  • What does the customer really want to achieve?
  • What challenges is the customer currently facing?
  • Why is this a problem?
  • What are the consequences if nothing changes?
  • What interests are at play within the organization?
  • Who is involved in the decision?
  • What value does a possible solution have?
  • What is needed for the customer to actually make a decision?

Only when this is clear will I discuss a suitable solution. In doing so, the salesperson transforms from a product seller into a discussion partner and commercial advisor.

Consultative Selling briefly summarized

Consultative Selling is a method of advisory selling in which the customer need, the problem, and the desired value take center stage. My Consultative Selling Training is intended for B2B sales professionals, account managers, business developers, and commercial teams, among others. Topics may include questioning techniques, SPIN Selling, needs analysis, DMU, value selling, handling objections, and closing. As the best sales trainer in the Netherlands in 2025, I base this training on more than 30 years of practical experience and over 2,000 trained participants.

Do you recognize this within your sales organization?

Many sales professionals possess excellent product knowledge, but use that knowledge too quickly in a sales conversation. They explain what their organization does, which products or services are provided, and why their solution is good. Meanwhile, important commercial questions are not asked, or are asked insufficiently.

  • Salespeople talk more than the customer.
  • A product or solution is presented too quickly.
  • Sales conversations remain superficial.
  • Actual customer needs are insufficiently investigated.
  • Insufficient follow-up questioning is done regarding problems and consequences.
  • Salespeople are regularly asked to "just send a quote".
  • Price carries too much weight in the purchasing decision.
  • Decision-makers and influencers within the DMU are insufficiently recognized.
  • Opportunities for cross-selling and upselling are being missed.
  • Sales conversations end without a concrete next step.

My Consultative Selling Training helps sales professionals bring more structure, commercial depth, and control to these conversations.

What do you learn during a Consultative Selling Training?

The exact content depends on your learning objectives, experience, position, and chosen training format. Topics that may be covered during a Consultative Selling course or training include:

Discovering customer needs

Learn to distinguish between what a customer initially asks and what they actually need. By looking beyond the initial question, new commercial opportunities often arise.

Asking the right sales questions

Good questions ensure that the customer thinks, shares information, and gains insight into their own situation. You will learn to consciously use different types of questions and to probe further at the right moment.

Applying SPIN Selling

Situation, Problem, Implication, and Need payoff questions help steer a conversation from a general need to the actual commercial value of a solution.

Consultative selling

Learn to understand first before you advise. The solution follows from the needs analysis, and not the other way around.

Selling value instead of just price

When a customer sees insufficient value, price quickly becomes the most important point of comparison. You will learn to make the added value of your solution visible from the customer's perspective.

Dealing with objections

"Too expensive." "We already have a supplier." "I need to think about it." "Just send a quote." During the training, you learn to investigate objections instead of immediately fighting them.

DMU and decision-making

In B2B sales, multiple people are often involved in a purchasing decision. You will learn to identify decision-makers, influencers, users, and other stakeholders and involve them in the sales process.

Closing and concrete follow-up agreements

A good sales conversation must lead to something. You will learn to recognize buying signals and naturally steer towards a concrete next step.

Consultative Selling for B2B Sales

In B2B sales, a customer rarely purchases exclusively a product. For example, an organization buys an improvement, savings, a solution to a problem, risk reduction, additional capacity, or the ability to achieve a specific business result.

Therefore, it is essential that a salesperson understands not only what the customer is asking, but especially why the customer is asking it.

Consultative Selling helps to make this underlying commercial need visible. This is particularly relevant for complex products and services, longer sales cycles, multiple decision-makers, and situations where different suppliers offer seemingly similar solutions.

Consultative Selling and SPIN Selling

Consultative Selling and SPIN Selling reinforce each other.

Consultative Selling describes the advisory approach to the sales conversation. SPIN Selling offers a concrete question structure with which I have a client's situation, problems, consequences, and desired results further investigated.

By practically applying both methodologies, a sales conversation is created in which the customer takes center stage and the salesperson maintains commercial control, without turning the conversation into a traditional sales pitch.

From product-oriented to customer-oriented selling

A common mistake in sales is that salespeople want to prove their knowledge by talking a lot. But extensive product knowledge does not automatically make someone a good salesperson.

A professional consultative seller knows when to ask, when to listen, when to probe further, and when the time has come to recommend a solution.

The goal is therefore not less knowledge. The goal is to apply that knowledge at the right moment .

Practice-oriented Consultative Selling Training

You do not learn Consultative Selling solely from theory. That is why practice is central to my sales training. Participants work with recognizable commercial situations and practice sales conversations, questioning techniques, handling objections, and various phases of the sales process.

For a customized training, I use situations from your own organization, for example:

  • A first meeting with a prospect
  • A conversation with an existing account
  • Needs analysis
  • Price objection
  • Competition
  • A complex DMU
  • Cross-selling and upselling
  • Quote follow-up
  • Obtaining commitment for a next step

This enables participants to immediately translate what they have learned into their daily sales practice.

Why Consultative Selling?

The modern customer can compare products, suppliers, prices, and solutions themselves. The added value of a professional salesperson therefore lies less and less in simply providing information.

The added value lies in understanding, analyzing, advising, and guiding the client towards a sound decision .

That is the core of Consultative Selling.

Frequently Asked Questions about Consultative Selling

What is Consultative Selling?

Consultative Selling is an advisory sales method in which the salesperson first investigates the customer's situation, challenges, needs, and objectives before proposing a solution. As a result, the salesperson acts more as a commercial advisor than as a traditional product seller.

What is the difference between Consultative Selling and traditional selling?

In traditional selling, the emphasis is often on presenting a product or service and its benefits. With Consultative Selling, however, the sales conversation starts with the customer. By asking questions and probing, I first investigate what problem needs to be solved, what value is important, and which factors influence the purchasing decision.

Is Consultative Selling the same as advisory selling?

In practice, the terms are often used for the same customer-oriented sales approach. Consultative selling means that a salesperson first analyzes and understands before advising. The solution is linked to the customer's actual needs and desired results.

Who is a Consultative Selling Training suitable for?

The training is suitable for, among others, account managers, sales professionals, business developers, inside and outside sales representatives, sales consultants, sales engineers, and entrepreneurs who conduct B2B sales conversations and wish to provide advisory guidance to clients.

Which techniques are covered during a Consultative Selling Training?

Depending on the learning objectives, topics such as needs analysis, questioning techniques, SPIN Selling, consultative selling, DMU, value selling, handling objections, closing, cross-selling, and upselling can be covered. For customized training, I use your own customer cases and commercial situations.

Is Consultative Selling suitable for B2B sales?

Yes. Consultative Selling is particularly well-suited for B2B sales, where multiple stakeholders, longer sales cycles, advice, trust, and added value play an important role.

Can Consultative Selling be offered as an in-company training?

Yes. I tailor an In-company Consultative Selling Training to the organization, target group, products or services, the sales process, and the commercial objectives. This allows participants to practice with situations they actually encounter in their own sales practice.
